Idlewild Coffee is a neighborhood coffee bar tucked into the old SXSW building at the corner of Lavaca and 14th — a few blocks from the capitol, under a canopy of old oak trees.
Our story
Idlewild started with a simple idea: downtown Austin needed a coffee bar that felt less like a queue and more like a refuge. Somewhere the espresso pulls bold and clean, the milk steams quietly, and there's a seat by the window when you need one.
We're tucked inside the SXSW building near the capitol — a modern brick space with high ceilings, plenty of outlets, and a long view through old oak branches. On a weekday morning before the rush, it's one of the most peaceful corners in the city.
"Exceptional hidden gem oasis downtown. Wonderful spot to get work done with plenty of outlets. Gorgeous views of the old oak trees outside." — Max Barlow, on Google
What we believe
Coffee that's just right — not too weak, not buried in sweet creamer. The kind of cup that wakes you up gently and stays consistent every single visit.
No upcharge for alternative milks. Oat, almond, soy — same price as dairy. We think charging extra for what most people drink anyway is a little silly.
A quiet lobby with plenty of seats, outlets at almost every table, and a vibe that says: stay as long as you'd like. Reading, working, or just sitting still.
A day at Idlewild
We open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM. Here's what most days look like, if you're trying to find the right window.
Doors open. The espresso machine warms up, the first oat-milk lattes go out, and the quietest hour of the day begins. The light through the oaks is at its best right around now.
The lobby fills with laptops, notebooks, and a small chorus of typing. Outlets at almost every seat. A second cup is easy to justify.
Peppermint matcha in a cute mug. A chai with oat milk. Whatever you need to carry through the rest of the day, served without a wait.
We close at three. Saturdays and Sundays we're shut — the room takes a breath, the oaks keep watching the street, and we're back at eight on Monday.
In their words
"The vibe is so perfect here. It was quiet, not busy at all and so aesthetic. I ended up ordering the peppermint matcha which came in such a cute mug. They don't charge for alternative milks which is so rare — highly recommend this place in downtown Austin."
"Really cool and trendy coffee bar with a smile. The coffee is just right — not too weak and not really sweet creamers, just good bold coffee. Great place to chill and start the morning."
"Exceptional hidden gem oasis downtown. Wonderful spot to get work done with plenty of outlets. Gorgeous views of the old oak trees outside."
We're at 1400 Lavaca St, on the corner across from the Texas State Capitol grounds. Walk in, find a seat, order at the bar.
